The state's name comes from the Tupi word pará, meaning 'sea' or large river, after the Pará River. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw economic booms from rubber extraction, followed by stagnation and later mineral exploitation in the 1960s–1970s, including iron from Serra dos Carajás and gold from Serra Pelada.
